Languages and your own wording
Desktop Plan can be shown in English or in Dutch (Nederlands). This chapter covers how to choose a language, and how to put your own words in place of ours.
Choosing a language#
There are two settings, because a plan and the program can each have a language:
- The program’s language is set in File › App settings, under Language. It is used for App settings itself, the licence and updates, and the dashboard of all open projects. New plans start in it.
- Each plan’s language is set in Project › Edit project…, under Language. Everything you see for that plan follows it: the ribbon, menus, columns, messages and its exports to PDF and Excel. Switching to another plan’s tab switches to that plan’s language.
Changing the program’s language never changes a plan you have already made. The names you type (tasks, notes, people) always stay as you typed them.
The first time Desktop Plan starts, it uses the language Windows is set to, if Desktop Plan has it, and English otherwise. A copy you used before languages came in stays in English until you change it.
Typing in a Dutch plan
In a Dutch plan you type durations, lags and work the Dutch way, with a decimal comma: 4u for 4 hours, 0,5d for half a day. The Done column takes ja and nee, and Priority takes Hoog, Normaal and Laag. The English ways (4h, yes, High) still work too.
Using your own wording#
If a word in our Dutch is not the one your team uses, you can change it. Your wording is used everywhere ours would have been, in every Dutch plan on this computer.
Your own wording is part of Desktop Plan Pro. In the free version the button is greyed out.
Open File › App settings and click Edit wording… under Language.
The Wording page lists every text in four columns: where it appears, the English, our Dutch, and Your wording.
Find the text you want. Type in Search (it looks in all three columns), or choose an area under Where, such as Menus and ribbon or Messages.
Type your words in the Your wording box. Leave a box empty to use ours. The × beside a box puts ours back.
Click Save (or press Ctrl+S). When you close the page, the whole window is shown in your wording.
Reset all puts back our wording for every text you changed. Nothing changes until you click Save.
What the page checks
- Some texts have places where Desktop Plan fills something in, written in braces, such as
{task}or{date}. Your wording must keep the same ones, or the message would have a gap in it. The page shows in red what is missing, and Save waits until it is fixed. - The six menus (File, Edit and so on) each have a letter you press with Alt. If you rename a menu, its letter must still be in the name and differ from the other menus’ letters.
- A word much longer than ours in the menus, the ribbon or a column heading may not fit. The page warns you, but lets you save it.
A few texts cannot be changed, because Desktop Plan reads them back when you type: the letters for hours and days in a duration, the decimal sign, the yes and no of the Done column, the names of the months, and the words in the Priority column.
When we change a text
When a new version of Desktop Plan changes the English or our Dutch for a text you changed, the page marks that row and shows what it said before. Your wording is still used. Click Keep my wording to clear the mark, or change your wording.
If the English now needs a place your wording does not have, such as a new {date}, your wording is set aside and ours is shown until you fix it.
To see every marked row, choose Changed since I edited them under Show.
Sharing your wording#
- Export… saves your wording as an Excel file. It lists every text, with yours where you have one, and has a Note column for your comments.
- Import… reads such a file into the page. Use it to give a whole team the same wording: one person exports, the others import. An empty Your wording cell in the file puts ours back for that text. Nothing changes until you click Save.
Sending your wording to us#
We are not native Dutch speakers. If you have improved our wording, we would like to see it.
Click Send to Desktop Plan…. Desktop Plan saves your wording as an Excel file and opens a new email to [email protected] in your email program. The email says where the file was saved: attach it before you send. Nothing is sent until you send the email yourself.
If no email program opens, Desktop Plan tells you where the file is, so you can send it to [email protected] another way.
Good to know#
- Your wording is kept on this computer, for your Windows account. To use it on another computer, export it here and import it there.
- Help › About Desktop Plan… says when you are using your own wording, and in how many texts.
- English cannot be changed.
