Questions and answers

Why can’t I type a start date for this task?#

It waits for another task, so its start comes from that link. To start it later, give the link a lag, for example 2d (see Linking tasks). To start it earlier, give it a negative lag or remove the link. Phases can’t take a typed start either, because their dates come from the tasks inside them.

I typed a Sunday and the task starts on Monday. Why?#

Nobody works on Sundays in that task’s calendar, so the work starts on the next working day. Change the working week if Sundays should count (see Working days and holidays).

Why does a 1-day task end on the same day it starts?#

Because it is one working day long: it starts in the morning and ends that evening. A 2-day task starting on Monday ends on Tuesday.

The task after my milestone starts the same day. In Gantt Excel it started the next day.#

A milestone takes no time, so the next task can start straight away. Add a lag of 1d to the link if you want a day’s gap.

My bar won’t move when I drag it.#

Check three things: the zoom must be Day, Week or Hour. The task mustn’t wait for another task (its links decide its start). And it mustn’t be a phase. The message at the bottom of the window says which.

Why is everything greyed out and a banner says "Read only"?#

In the free version, every plan except your own free plan opens to look at only, and so does any plan with more tasks than the free version allows (see Licence and updates). Otherwise, someone else has the plan open from a shared folder (see Files, tabs and recovery).

Why can’t I add or move tasks? Add task is greyed out.#

The list is sorted or filtered. Click Clear sort and filter, or click the WBS heading. If the selected row is inside a folded phase, open the phase first.

I pressed Delete but the task is still there.#

The Delete key clears the cell you are in. To remove the whole task, click Delete on the ribbon or right-click the row and choose Delete.

How do I print my Gantt chart or save it as a PDF?#

Click Export on the ribbon and choose Export to PDF…, pick the paper size, then print the PDF. See Exporting to PDF and Excel.

Can I export to Excel or Microsoft Project?#

Excel, yes: click Export on the ribbon and choose Export to Excel…. The workbook shows your task list and Gantt chart, for reading and sharing; changes made in Excel don’t come back into the plan. See Exporting to PDF and Excel. There is no export to Microsoft Project.

Can I open Microsoft Project files?#

No. Desktop Plan imports Gantt Excel workbooks only.

Can amounts be written as € 6.000.000,00 instead of € 6,000,000.00?#

Yes. Choose Project › Edit project… and set Number format to 1.234.567,89 and Symbol to before, with a space. A new plan already starts this way when your Windows region writes money like that. See Costs and budget.

Where are my settings kept?#

Most are saved with each plan: the columns, the date format, how progress is set and the rest. Your computer keeps your last choices, which a new plan starts with, and a few things of your own, such as the zoom and the size of the panels, in your Windows user profile.

I sent my plan to a colleague and it looks different.#

The theme, bar style, header, bar colours, columns, date format and the other settings travel with the plan. Only the zoom and the size of the panels are each person’s own choice.

Does Desktop Plan need the internet?#

Only to activate a licence and to check for updates. Desktop Plan never sends your plans anywhere.

My PC crashed. Is my work lost?#

Probably not. Open Desktop Plan again and choose Recover when it asks (see Files, tabs and recovery).
